Does a service at an independent mechanic keep my new-car warranty?

Yes, provided the work is done to the manufacturer's specification, genuine or equivalent-quality parts are used, and the logbook is stamped. Under Australian Consumer Law the warranty is not tied to the dealer network.

What should a logbook service cost in Tasmania?

It varies with the make and the service interval. Ask for the price of the specific interval you are due - a fixed price for that service, not an hourly estimate - and ask whether the price includes the fluids and filters.

Do I need a roadworthy inspection to register a car in Tasmania?

A vehicle that has been unregistered for a period, or that is being registered for the first time in the state, generally needs an inspection. Ask the workshop whether they are approved to do it, because not all are.

Can a mobile mechanic come to me?

Some do, and it is common in rural areas. Mobile work is usually fine for servicing and diagnostics but not for anything needing a hoist.

About mechanics in Midlands

The Midlands is the dry heart of Tasmania along the Midland Highway between Hobart and Launceston — historic towns like Oatlands, Ross and Campbell Town surrounded by grazing country. It is the driest and frost-prone part of the state, with long drives between towns and a rural outlook on almost everything. If you are not in one of the towns, you are on a property some distance from one.
