About garden centres & market gardens in Hobart
Hobart sits between the Derwent estuary and kunanyi / Mount Wellington, and the city runs from the heritage streets of Battery Point and North Hobart out through the northern suburbs and Glenorchy to the eastern shore and south toward the Huon. It is the state's largest centre but still a small city by mainland standards, so most services are within a short drive of the CBD. Winter brings frost in the Derwent Valley and snow on the mountain, and the weather changes fast enough that plans made on a Monday are often remade by Friday.
The ranking
Featured listings are marked and appear first. The remaining businesses are ordered editorially by what we could verify from their own material. Order is not a paid ranking, and we do not list businesses we cannot confirm.

Garden Centres & Market Gardens in Hobart — common questions
- What is the difference between a garden centre and a wholesale nursery?
- A garden centre sells to the public in small quantities and is usually open seven days. A wholesale nursery sells tubestock, seedlings or trees by the tray to landscapers, farms and other nurseries, often on account and often by appointment — ringing first saves a wasted trip.
- Will Tasmanian natives bought locally survive a frosty site?
- Provenance matters more than the species name. Ask whether the plants were grown from local seed and what minimum temperature the grower would stand behind for that batch, because a plant raised on the coast can behave very differently inland.
- Can I buy seedlings in bulk for a market garden?
- Yes, but order early. Wholesale seedling growers take orders weeks ahead of planting and book their glasshouse space in advance, so a late order often means substituting varieties or waiting for the next sowing.
- Do garden centres deliver soil, mulch and gravel?
- Most deliver bulk loads locally, priced per cubic metre plus a delivery fee that rises with distance. Ask about access before you order — a tipper truck needs a clear run to the drop point, and some properties need a smaller load split into two trips.
